Ο δήμος συστάθηκε με το ΦΕΚ 244Α - 04/12/1997 με έδρα το Κρίκελλο. Με το ΦΕΚ 87Α - 07/06/2010 οι οικισμοί του προσαρτήθηκαν στο δήμο Καρπενησίου και ο δήμος καταργήθηκε.
