History
Dimitri Curmuli (Dimitrios Kourmoulis), a Greek merchant in Venice, c. 1772-1777, who later moved to Amsterdam, acted primarily as an agent for a large Greek firm in Smyrna. The Curmuli house was in fact a branch of a Greek multinational based on capital from Chios. The firm had branches in Venice (later in Trieste), Amsterdam, Smyrna and Constantinople and was managed by Ioannis Avgerinos, a Swedish diplomatic protégé. Curmuli was married to a Dutch merchant’s daughter, a very unusual circumstance at the time. Curmuli ran into serious trouble in Amsterdam when the main branch in Smyrna, managed by Ioannis Avgerinos, went bankrupt in 1783. He travelled to Smyrna to defend his claims against Avgerinos only to be murdered there, presumably by his former partner’s accomplices.
