Ο Μιχάλης Περιστεράκης, δικηγόρος, ηγετική φυσιογνωμία από νεαρής ηλικίας στο αντιπολεμικό και ειρηνικό κίνημα, υπήρξε στέλεχος της Ν.ΕΔΑ, ιδρυτικό μέλος και πρόεδρος του Συνδέσμου Νέων διά τον Πυρηνικόν Αφοπλισμόν “Bertrand Russell”, ενώ στη μεταπολίτευση αναδείχθηκε πρόεδρος της Αδέσμευτης Κίνησης Ειρήνης (ΑΚΕ).
