Ο Νίκος Αντωνάτος φοίτησε στην Ανωτάτη Εμπορική και δραστηριοποιήθηκε στο πλαίσιο του κινήματος επαρχιωτών σπουδαστών, όπου αναδείχθηκε πρόεδρος του τοπικού Σπουδαστικού Συλλόγου Στερεοελλαδιτών. Στο στρατό υπηρέτησε στη μονάδα χαρακτηρισμένων της Εράτυρας Κοζάνης.
