Η Εταιρία Κρητικών Ιστορικών Μελετών ιδρύθηκε το 1951 με σκοπό την προαγωγή των κρητολογικών, αρχαιολογικών, ιστορικών, εθνογραφικών, φιλολογικών σπουδών από τους πρώτους χριστιανικούς χρόνους και μετά.

Συγκεντρώθηκε κατά τα πρώτα χρόνια λειτουργίας της ΕΚΙΜ έπειτα από προσκλήσεις σε δασκάλους των χωριών να καταγράψουν τα τοπωνύμια των Κοινοτήτων στα οποία εργάζονται.
